چکیده
Does a large influx of asylum seekers in the local community lead to backlash public opinion towards foreign populations? We assess effects seeker presence using original survey and macro-level municipality data from Austria, exploiting exogenous elements placement on level. Methodologically, we draw entropy balancing for causal identification. Our findings are threefold. First, respondents municipalities receiving report substantially higher exposure average, but largely without stronger contact that would allow meaningful interaction. Second, hostility average increased areas housed them. Third, this spilt over: general attitudes Muslims immigrants less favourable contexts with presence, while vote intention main anti-immigration party is higher. go beyond existing work by examining directly as mechanism, showing effect medium term, focusing broad set attitudinal behavioural measures. results point need design policy interventions minimise citizen against rapid migration inflows.

Equilibria of culture contact derived from ingroup and outgroup attitudes
Modern societies feature an increasing contact between cultures, yet we have a poor understanding of what the outcomes might be. Here we consider a mathematical model of contact between social groups, grounded in social psychology and analyzed using tools from statistical physics. We use the model to study how a culture might be affected by immigration. We find that in some cases residents’ cul...
متن کاملContextual effect of positive intergroup contact on outgroup prejudice.
We assessed evidence for a contextual effect of positive intergroup contact, whereby the effect of intergroup contact between social contexts (the between-level effect) on outgroup prejudice is greater than the effect of individual-level contact within contexts (the within-level effect). Across seven large-scale surveys (five cross-sectional and two longitudinal), using multilevel analyses, we ...
متن کاملNarrating Europe’s migration and refugee ‘crisis'
It is very clear – as many journalists covering the unfolding migration and refugee crisis have pointed out – that geography lies at the heart of the events taking place in Europe and the Mediterranean. It is a story of borders and routes, of distance and proximity, and of location and accessibility. The role of (re-)bordering has been fundamental in states’ attempts to ‘manage’ and ‘control’ t...
متن کاملIntergroup Contact and Outgroup Humanization: Is the Causal Relationship Uni- or Bidirectional?
The attribution of uniquely human characteristics to the outgroup may favor the search for contact with outgroup members and, vice versa, contact experiences may improve humanity attributions to the outgroup. To explore this bidirectional relationship, two studies were performed. In Study 1, humanity perceptions were manipulated using subliminal conditioning. Two experimental conditions were cr...

• Increasing mortality. The overall death rate grew steadily from 1991 until peaking in 1994, then gradually abating. This reflects the well-publicized increase in male (and, less markedly, female) mortality during the first half of the 1990s. The male death rate jumped from 11.6 per thousand in 1990 to 17.8 per thousand in 1994, then declined somewhat to 15.0 per thousand in 1997. The mortalit...
